CWS Impact Garage Doors: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS manufactures impact-rated garage doors under a few distinct series, and the parts are not all interchangeable. The two you’ll see most often in Tampa are the CWS 500 Series (single-skin steel, common in mid-2000s builds) and the CWS 700 Series (insulated, heavier, more common in homes built after 2010). The 700 Series uses a thicker track profile and heavier-duty roller stems than the 500. A roller that fits a 500 Series will wobble in a 700 Series track, and a 700 roller will bind in a 500 track. We check the tag before we order anything.

The easiest way to identify your exact model is to look at the manufacturer’s sticker on the inside of the door’s bottom panel, near the hinge line. If the sticker is gone, we measure the panel thickness and the roller stem diameter to nail down the series. For most CWS doors, the OEM part is a reliable choice, but there are a few quality aftermarket equivalents we prefer for rollers and hinges because they use sealed bearings that last longer in Florida. For panels, we always recommend OEM or a factory-authorized replacement. The panel curvature and interlock profile are specific to CWS, and a generic panel will leave a visible seam and a weak point in the wind load rating. If the door is part of a wind-rated opening, that’s not something we’ll compromise.

Signs Your CWS Impact Garage Doors Is Failing

• The door grinds or squeals when opening. This almost always comes down to rollers with worn or dry bearings. On CWS doors near the coast, salt air accelerates bearing wear; we’ve replaced rollers on doors less than four years old in South Tampa that look like they’re ten years old.
• The door hangs slightly crooked when it stops. That’s a spring tension imbalance or a worn hinge on one side. The door keeps working for a while, but the extra load wears out rollers and, eventually, the opener’s drive gear.
• You can see daylight through the bottom corner of the closed door. The bottom seal or the bottom panel itself has shifted or cracked. On an impact-rated door, a split bottom panel compromises the wind rating. This is a fix, not a “keep an eye on it” situation.
• The door shudders halfway through the cycle. Typically the track is slightly out of alignment, or a roller stem has worn down to the point where the roller is riding off-angle in the track. Ignoring this will wear the track itself, and a track replacement is a bigger job.
• The opener runs fine but the door moves slowly or not at all. A snapped or tired spring is the usual cause. The opener motor is pulling against a spring that isn’t helping, and the motor will fail shortly after. If the door is heavy to lift by hand, the spring is done.
